Build Up Omaha Award Spotlight:Virgina Arce

This year Nebraskans for Civic Reform is excited to host our first event in Omaha called Build Up Omaha. The idea behind this event is to honor those  who have demonstrated civic leadership in the Omaha community and are working to create a more civic and civil society. This civic leadership is typified by, use of consensus building and civic discourse to solve a community issue or problem, civic leadership to directly (hands on) address the issue or problem or developing leadership among and involving others.

No instance of leadership is too big or small, which is why we chose to honor students in our Omaha after school programs for the work they have done in their clubs.

We chose to highlight Virginia Arce, who is in the third grade. Virginia is a smart and kind Sherman Elementary student.  She goes over and beyond to take part in Sherman After School activities and assist others whenever needed.  Virginia helped her grandmother last summer with food distribution to Sherman Elementary families that needed supplemental food  support.

Virginia consistently chooses to participate in CLC Service Learning Projects.   Recently, she took part in the Keep Omaha Beautiful project at Sherman CLC.  Virginia, two peers and a CLC staff member walked the Sherman Elementary neighborhood marking storm drains with a Only Rain Down the Storm Drain stickers.  She helped clean out drains at the street level and collected a great deal of trash.  She placed information cards on neighbors doors. The cards reminded residents that trash that goes down a storm drain gets washed into local streams and rivers.
Virgina Arce is an example of an outstanding Sherman Elementary CLC student and one that demonstrates care for friends, neighbors and the environment.
We are so excited to award Virginia with this award.
