The Case for Capitol Experience Day

One of the flagship programs at Nebraskans for Civic Reform is the Capitol Experience
Day, where we work with local civics teachersDSC_0004 to support and supplement the work they do to teach government and citizenship.  We do this by hosting students for an immersive, engaging day at the Nebraska state capitol.  High school students from all over the state spend the day engaging with a state senator, a member of the executive branch (e.g. Attorney General), and a Nebraska Supreme Court justice.  They listen to the debate on the floor of the legislature, tour the capitol, and perhaps most importantly, take an active role in a mock committee hearing.
In our five years of hosting these CAP days, we’ve found that students walk away with an increased understanding of and appreciation for state government and their important role as a citizen. As long-time supporter and high school civics teacher said, “I say it every semester– but our trip to the capitol is my favorite day as a teacher!”
Giving to Nebraskans for Civic Reform means supporting the Capitol Experience DaysDSC_0018 by providing transportation for students to visit the capitol, supplying the students with mock committee hearing curriculum, and connecting them with their local power structures.  Creating an empowered citizenry could use your support!
